ETHICS, THE ECONOMY
AND THE IDEA OF JUSTICE

Nowadays, both businesses and the society are confronted with a number of highly difficult developments. Many European economies are still affected by the global economic crises and despite the good education that is provided to the majority of citizens, the unemployment rates are remaining at a high level in most European countries. Additionally, as a result of global poverty and conflicts, the refugee crisis caught the European Union off guard and the strengthening of anti-immigrant, eurosceptic and extreme right parties all over Europe raises the question of the European democratic stronghold. Moreover, the exposed dramatic scale of tax fraud questions the integrity of businesses and individuals. And as if all this was not yet enough, Great Britain turns its back on the European Union, revealing the need for reformation of the European Institutions.

The aim of the conference

Having these various crises in mind raises the question of how stability can be restored. What role can ethics, the economy and justice play in this situation? Which potentials do they have and where are their constraints? In particular, the concept of Justice as an essential component of sustainability is at the focus. According to Dower, justice is about realizing the same basic rights for all. Though, he claims that the global economy fails to realize justice and sustainability (Dower 2004). The aim of this Research Conference is to promote the exchange of knowledge and to propose solution approaches of how ethics, the economy and justice can contribute to a stable society.

 Eleni Leontsini is Assistant Professor of the History of Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Ioannina, Greece and Departmental Erasmus Coordinator.

 She was born in Athens and grew up in Piraeus, Greece and Norwich, UK where she attended Blackdale Middle School (Norwich, East Anglia). She graduated with the grade ‘Excellent’ from Ionideios Pilot School of Piraeus and then read for her B.A. (4yr course) in the Sub-Faculty of Philosophy, Psychology and Pedagogy (specialization: Philosophy) at the Faculty of Arts of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

Before joining the University of Ioannina in 2012, she has taught philosophy at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Glasgow from 1998 to 2004. From 2000 until 2002, she also taught philosophy at the Departments of Philosophy of the University of Edinburgh and the University of St Andrews.

Currently, she is also teaching philosophy at the Greek Civilization Undergraduate Programme of the Hellenic Open Universityand at the Postgraduate Programme (M.A. in History and History Didactics) of the Department of Primary Education of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

PANAGIOTIS PERROS 

Born in 1981 in the area of Plato’s Academy. Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology (University of Athens – 2003). Master’s degree in Ethics (University of Athens -2006). Social Science postgraduate studies (University of Leicester, UK – 2009). PhD Thesis in Philosophy: “Voluntary exit: the ethics of suicide” (University of Athens -2014). Publication of articles in Greek and International journals (2004-2016) and an “Introduction to Philosophy” handbook, for the Open University of Cyprus (2012). Participation in conferences and public seminars. Scientific Research Fellow in the Parliament of Greece, cooperating with the “Union of Centrists” parliamentary party (2015-2017).
